How to score big on the CC exam's demonstration component
Did you know that the Certified Cicerone® exam has a "demonstration component" where the candidate has to show off a beer skill in front of a camera? As long as you've studied your Beer Scholar Study Guide for the Certified Cicerone® Exam and read the advice on how to beat the demonstration section you'll be in good shape even if you're asked to demonstrate something you've never done before.
Here are the facts about the demonstration portion:
- It will concern material in the "Keeping and Serving" portion of the CC syllabus.
- You will be given an item with which to demonstrate the skill, such as a keg coupler, beer faucet, or beer glass.
- You'll have 3 minutes and you will be videotaped.
- The demonstration counts for 4% of your total score on the CC exam.
What are they going to ask you? It's got to do with "Keeping and Serving" and it has to be something that utilizes a small item that's easy to test with in any location. You could be asked to demonstrate something you've never done before, especially if you haven't worked at a bar or restaurant where you'll have gained experience giving proper pours and cleaning draft systems. You'll need a strategy! Here it is: all the while discuss everything you know about the topic to prove you know your stuff even if the demonstration goes poorly!
For instance, if you're handed a keg coupler and asked to demonstrate how to disassemble and properly clean it, even if you've never done that before you know a TON about cleaning draft systems from studying the Beer Scholar Study Guide for the Certified Cicerone® Exam. You can talk about how couplers need to be taken apart and cleaned with a brush and a caustic chemical every two weeks, that you should wear gloves, etc. Approach it like a verbal essay.
Here are a couple YouTube videos you should watch and memorize, they are common demonstration section questions and they contain critical information for being an expert draft system operator:
