WILD DOES NOT MEAN SOUR

Why Wild Does Not Mean Sour by John Laffler of Off Color Brewing. John really wanted people to learn this a couple years ago when he printed it on tees and wrote this brief post. There is still a LOT of confusion out there about sour vs wild vs kettle sour vs mixed fermentation vs Brett, etc. This piece helps clear some of that up.

IS IT CRYSTAL OR CARAMEL MALT?

Is it Crystal or Caramel Malt? By Bob Hanson for Brewing With Briess. Did you know that not all caramel malt is crystal malt? Do you know about mealy vs glassy malt? It’s hair splitting detail unless you’re a brewer, but it’s the sort of stuff that could help on a Cicerone exam.

THC & NA BEER ON THE COME UP?

Philosophy of Non-Alcoholic beers and cannabis discussed at CBC by Matt Kirkegaard for BrewsNews out of Australia. Many have been dismissive, but NA and THC beer feels like a tidal wave. This is happening, people, and it’s going to be huge…especially when the US fully legalizes THC, whenever that’ll be.

KVEIKY GOODNESS

Metamodern Tastes in Country Beer, Part I: Eik & Tid by Joe Stange for Good Beer Hunting. Eik & Tid is a super fascinating Norwegian brewery that are mashing up traditional farmhouse ale making with modern mixed culture production. They do lots of fermentation with kveik strains and make raw ales. They’re all around interesting and it’s worth keeping an eye out for their goodies.

WHO KNEW OLD STILL LIFE PAINTINGS WERE THIS DEEP!

A Messy Table, a Map of the World by Jason Farago for the New York Times. This is an incredibly interesting and visual story about still life paintings by Dutch masters. Everyone walks by these at the museum, but it turns out there’s a whole lot more going on in those paintings than just a bunch of food on a table.

WHAT I’M WATCHING

Star Trek Strange New Worlds (entire first episode on YouTube!). It’s so great to see Paramount developing new Star Trek shows. Strange New Worlds just launched last week and it’s very promising. It’s a good time to get a sub to Paramount+ if you’re a Trekker.

Have a lovely weekend, y'all!
