MORE CRISPR-IZED YEAST STRAINS

Sightglass: The Future of Yeast by Jeff Alworth for Beervana. I linked to some super “Thiolized” genetically modified yeast from Omega Yeast last week. I truly believe that, along with kveik strains (or at least their genes), this stuff is going to change the entire beer game in time, so even if I linked you to something about it every week it’d hardly be enough. Here, Jeff Alworth discusses some other new strains including modified Chico yeast that makes lots of lactic acid (no lactobacillus required?!) and another that doesn’t produce diacetyl from Berkeley Yeast. Very, very cool stuff.

HIKE & A BEER?

How about beer hikes in Switzerland or Germany?! Sounds great to me! Check out these great English language blogs about hikes you can do in Germany and Switzerland that are all about including a bunch of great beer stops — Franz D. Hofer’s TempestinaTankard.com and Rich Carbonara’s BeerWanderers.com(who also has a book on Amazon, Beer Hiking Bavaria). If you know of any similar resources for anywhere else, please shoot me the links, I love this stuff!

HOORAY FOR CRAFT BEER

Cartoonist & fellow Advanced Cicerone Em Sauter just dropped her second book, Hooray for Craft Beer!: An Illustrated Guide to Beer. Flip through to learn some fun beer facts and it also makes a great gift. Check out this podcast interview of Em by another beer writer I’m quite fond of, John Holl, who recently took over & relaunched the storied All About Beer magazine and also just dropped a great book, The Craft Brewery Cookbook: Recipes To Pair With Your Favorite Beers

THE CHALLENGES OF PASSION-BASED BEER CAREERS

Craft brewing’s hiring crisis and the challenges of a ‘passion-driven’ career by Aaron Delgaty & Eli R. Wilson for Fast Company. My whole schtick is encouraging folks to get beer smart so they can have successful careers in beer. I myself made the switch to beer from being a lawyer. So, it feels weird to post an article about the challenges in the business, but we all see it, whether it’s with race, gender, and sexuality, or just the plain old fact that passion-based work doesn’t always pay well and come with great benefits. This piece digs into the ups and downs of employment in the biz when it comes to burn out and pay vs passion and other perks.

FAST CARBS

The Danger of Fast Carbs by David Kessler for The Atlantic. One thing you don’t see a whole lot of discussion about in the beer biz are health issues related to drinking. The reasons are obvious, but it’s important to keep health in mind for those of us who are around beer 24/7. This piece isn’t about beer per se, it’s about the general American style diet, which includes a lot of processed “fast carbs.” Educate yourself and be aware.

"A SPLENDID PROSE-POEM ABOUT THE MYSTERY & WONDER OF LIFE"

Atoms with Consciousness: Yo-Yo Ma Performs Richard Feynman’s Ode to the Wonder of Life, Animated by Maria Popova for The Marginalian. All you had to say was Richard Feynman + Yo-Yo Ma + Maria Popova. This whole series is magical and inspiring and I urge you to check it out some time when you have time to get stoned and chill with it for a bit.

Have a lovely weekend, y'all!
