Howdy beer geek! As you probably saw from my previous emails, I've soft released my new Beer Scholar Online Course for the CC Exam just to you folks on my email list! Upon release, it consists of 167 video lessons covering all the required knowledge areas. It's the easiest, quickest, and most efficient way to prep for the Certified Cicerone exam. It's totally up to date with the latest syllabus and BJCP Style Guidelines. It covers folks using ANY of the English language syllabi - the US, UK, Australia-NZ, & Canada. Over the coming months, I’ll be producing and posting lessons for each of the ~70 individual beer styles on the syllabus, too. Also, check out these side-by-side comparisons of classic styles I've also been posting to help you learn tasting and style discrimination for the CC tasting exam.

Beer of the Week: This week I got my hands on Tynt Meadow, the first English Trappist beer, brewed at Mount St Bernard Abbey in Leicestershire. It is EXCELLENT. Truly lovey, it's a deep dark dubbel-like beer, but made with all English ingredients. It's rich and dense, with lots of raisin, prune, and other dark fruit character. I've posted a link below about Mark Dredge's time at the Abbey, which sounds like an amazing place to visit. Also, shame on Untappd users, is this score a joke? Just another data point that Untappd is useless as a source of beer info...sorry not sorry.

As always, here are 6 dope links for your Friday 6 Pack. Enjoy.

WHAT IT'S LIKE TO STAY AT THE ABBEY WHERE TYNT MEADOW IS BREWED

The More You Master Something, the More Free You Feel — Mount Saint Bernard Abbey, Leicestershire, England by Mark Dredge for Good Beer Hunting. What's it like to stay at a Trappist monastery for a week? I've always wondered. If you have too, give this a read.

TRILLIUM GETS BLESSED BREWERY

Trillium Brewing Co. buys equipment from recently closed Trappist brewery in Spencer by Matthew Tota for telegram dot com. I'm super bummed that Spencer, the USA's only Trappist brewery has shuttered (they made some delicious stuff!). They've sold their very fancy and expensive brewery to Trillium.

TOPO CHICO THINKS YOU'RE A SUCKER

Topo Chico ‘Spirited’ Is a Bet You’re a Rube (And It Just Might Pay Off) by Dave Infante for VinePair. This article makes one simple point -- that the malt-derived non-distilled alcohol in a seltzer is exactly the same as the distilled liquor alcohol in a canned RTD (ready to drink) cocktail. And yet, many many people out there will pay a couple extra $ for sixer for the "liquor" version of the same exact drink.

BRAZIL HAS IT ALL FIGURED OUT

The Brazilian Art of Drinking a Beer ‘In the Ass’ by Jerard Fagerberg for The Takeout. This is a public service announcement. Be ready when the summer comes back around, y'all.

GABF WINNERS!

Great American Beer Festival® Competition Honors 2022 Winners. This is, like, totally old news at this point, but if you haven't checked out the GABF winners from a few weeks ago yet, now is the time.

HOW CHESS BECAME COOL

Cheating, groupies, big money and drunken brawls: how chess went rock’n’roll by Sean Ingle for The Guardian. I love chess and I play with friends on the chess.com app pretty much every day. I love that it's been getting so much attention and interest over the last few years thanks to covid, Queen's Gambit, and some great chess players also killing it on social! The scene is more rowdy and whacky than you knew!

Cheers,

Chris
